Littermates - why it is not advised.

Puppies

If you haven’t already heard of littermate syndrome then it’s something you need to research.

By getting two dogs from the same litter you risk major behavioural issues from these dogs UNLESS you are able to commit individual time to each dog for training, walking and socialising.  So when you think you are going to walk a dog for an hour, you now need two hours.

Any decent breeder will not give one home two puppies unless they have thoroughly assessed the home and are confident they can handle two puppies/adolescents/adults at one.

Even as a dog trainer I would never get two puppies at once. Being able to commit the time to give both puppies what they need is hard.

Not only is it time, it’s twice the food, twice the toys, twice the vets bills, two crates, two beds, four bowls. Each puppy should have they own crate (if you are crating) to ensure they have their own space and downtime, enough toys to ensure they don’t have to fight over it. Growing puppies need a lot of food!

It is not an easy feat looking after two puppies and this is why no trainer will recommend it.
