Something not everyone may know is that you do not need to be qualified to class yourself as a dog trainer. There are no legal regulations to hold people to a standard within this industry. You do not legally need insurance or qualifications to train dogs.
This means that there is a huge range within the industry, there is no rules for people to be held to. You have people with multiple university degrees compared to a hobby dog trainer who trained their family dogs.
While qualifications aren't necessarily key in all of this, they definitely do help. Equally you could have someone with multiple degrees but no experience, so they have all the knowledge in their brain but haven't actually put those facts into practice.

There is no right or wrong when choosing a dog trainer, the key thing is finding someone who suits you. Find someone who follows you idea of training and your ethics, who listens to your dogs needs. There is a lot of controversy due to the force free, positive, balanced techniques in the dog world, and this is not what this post is about. But each of those techniques dont necessarily suit everyone.
Ideally the person you choose will have insurance, experience and some sort of qualification. They will be someone who communicates clearly to you what they expect of you, and are able to help answer all the questions you ask of them. Now dont expect them to give you answers for free, because they would be out of a job if that was the way they worked.
Do your research into the trainers in your local area and find someone who is able to match your needs.
