Tips for Keeping Your Pets Happy and Comfortable During a Heatwave

When temperatures soar, pets face real challenges staying comfortable and safe. Heatwaves can cause stress, dehydration, and even heatstroke in animals, especially dogs who rely on us to protect them. For pet owners, knowing how to help pets stay cool and happy during hot days is essential. This guide offers practical tips to keep your furry friends comfortable and healthy when the mercury rises.

Provide Plenty of Fresh Water

Water is the most important resource during a heatwave. Pets lose fluids quickly through panting and sweating through their paws. To prevent dehydration:

  • Always keep multiple bowls of fresh, cool water accessible indoors and outdoors.

  • Change the water frequently to keep it fresh and inviting.

  • Consider adding ice cubes to the water bowl to help keep it cool longer.

  • For dog owners, portable water bottles with attached bowls are useful during walks.

Encouraging pets to drink regularly helps regulate their body temperature and avoid heat-related illnesses.

Create Cool Resting Spots

Pets need places to escape the heat. Here are ways to make cool zones:

  • Set up shaded areas outside using umbrellas, canopies, or trees.

  • Use cooling mats or damp towels for pets to lie on.

  • Keep indoor spaces well-ventilated with fans or air conditioning.

  • Close curtains or blinds during peak sunlight hours to reduce indoor heat.

For pet owners with dogs, avoid leaving them in parked cars or direct sunlight. Even a few minutes in a hot car can be dangerous.

Adjust Exercise and Outdoor Time

Heatwaves require changes to your pet’s routine to prevent overheating:

  • Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

  • Shorten walks and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.

  • Choose grassy or shaded paths instead of hot pavement, which can burn paws.

  • For active pets, provide indoor playtime or water-based activities like supervised swimming.

By adapting exercise times, pet owners can help pets stay active without risking heat exhaustion.

Use Cooling Products Safely

Several products can help pets stay cool, but use them carefully:

  • Cooling vests or bandanas soaked in cold water can lower body temperature.

  • Cooling mats with gel or water inside provide a refreshing surface.

  • Avoid ice packs directly on skin; wrap them in cloth to prevent frostbite.

  • Never use human cooling sprays or products not designed for animals.

Always monitor pets when using cooling products to ensure they are comfortable and safe.

Watch for Signs of Heat Stress

Pet owners should be alert to symptoms of overheating, which can escalate quickly:

  • Excessive panting or drooling

  • Lethargy or weakness

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Bright red or pale gums

  • Rapid heartbeat or difficulty breathing

  • Collapse or unresponsiveness

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cooler area immediately, offer water, and contact a veterinarian without delay.

Keep Grooming in Mind

Grooming helps pets stay comfortable in hot weather:

  • Regular brushing removes excess fur and helps air circulate near the skin.

  • Avoid shaving pets with double coats, as their fur protects against sunburn and heat.

  • Trim nails to prevent discomfort on hot surfaces.

  • Check for ticks and fleas, which can be more active in warm weather.

Proper grooming supports your pet’s natural ability to stay cool.

Provide Frozen Treats and Hydration Snacks

Frozen treats are a fun way to help pets cool down:

  • Freeze small pieces of fruit like blueberries or watermelon (safe for pets) as snacks.

  • Make ice cubes with diluted broth or pet-safe juice.

  • Offer frozen yogurt or specially made pet ice creams available at pet stores.

These treats encourage pets to stay hydrated and provide relief from the heat.

Keep Pets Indoors During Peak Heat

When temperatures climb above 85°F (29°C), it’s best to keep pets indoors as much as possible:

  • Create a comfortable indoor environment with fans or air conditioning.

  • Provide plenty of water and cool resting spots inside.

  • Limit outdoor time to brief bathroom breaks in shaded areas.

For pet owners living in apartments or homes without air conditioning, consider visiting pet-friendly cooling centers or friends’ homes during extreme heat.
