Should you be walking your dog off lead by the road?

If i was going to keep it short and sweet my first answer would be no.

Woman walking German Shepherd on country road at sunset, with trees lining the path and a field of yellow flowers. Calm, peaceful mood.

There are so many things that can go horrifically wrong if your dog is off lead by a road, so many things that people just dont consider.

You always get the excuses -

  • They dont pull if they're off lead

  • But they're good as gold

  • They wont go into the road, they're trained.

But what happens if they see something they want to chase? Or they get scared and feel the need to flee? What happens if theres an accident and you cant just drag your dog out of the path? Peoples ignorance could cause so many issues, a dog in the road can cause fatal accidents for drivers and dogs themselves.

When i see people walking their dogs offlead by the road it makes me angry as its purely ignorance. While it isnt against the law to walk dogs off lead by the road, it is in the highway code (rule 56) that a dog should be on a short lead when walking by a road.

It is the law to keep your dog under control at all times, so in a situation as any of the above, if your offlead dog gets into the road they will be classes as out of control and will be breaking the law.
