Not only is it down right nasty, and lazy if we don’t pick it up, but dog poo carries so many different types of harmful bacteria leaving it on the ground can cause many issues.
Did you know -
Dog poo can cause blindness in humans if it gets in their eyes?
Dog poo if ingested by livestock can cause them to abort their unborn calves?
It is against the law to not pick up your dog poo?
Under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, it is now against the law to leave your dog foul on the floor. Under this law pleading ignorance to your dog going to the toilet as you weren’t paying attention, doesn’t clear you from potentially facing a fine. You can be fined between £80 to £1000 for not picking up your dog poo and refusing to pay the fine can get you to court.
Public citizens can report failure to pick up dog foul to the council via the dog warden, unfortunately you do need evidence to report someone. However if reported by enough people of repeated, or areas with excessive fouling the council can send someone out to monitor the situation.
As a dog owner it is our responsibility to clean up after our dog, just the same as having to clean up after ourselves at home or ensure that our children do not have dirty nappies. You don’t have to be someone who uses biodegradable or compostable poo bags (although I do recommend it), but you DO have to be an owner who picks up your dog poo and puts it in the bin. It is in the ownership of having a dog, one of the responsibilities that you face when purchasing a dog, if you are not prepared to do this then you shouldn’t be buying one in the first place.
If you are someone who wants to be conscious about how many poo bags you use, and their impact on the environment then here are some of our poo bag suggestions -
